Make Good Art – North Dallas Photographer Mandy Hornbuckle

We went on a semi-vacation last week. I say “semi-vacation” because most vacations also include taekwondo in some way for us – my husband Jack was competing at a national tournament in Orlando, but after that we headed to the Destin area to visit with Jack’s uncle and his girlfriend for a few days. They are lovely hosts. And this is a pretty lovely place.

The beach is a rather lovely host as well.

I made friends with a bird.

I’m not really used to taking pictures of scenery over photos of people. But I’ve been learning a lot from photographers who do a lot of scenery photos, like James Brandon and Mike Mezeul (two of my many photography-crushes), and capturing scenery photos really makes you work on some technical aspects of photography that you don’t necessarily think about while you’re shooting people. It’s a nice challenge. And it’s an artsy challenge, which I don’t do enough of. I mean, “make good art” is in my tagline. Maybe I should make some good art, you know?

Plus, this isn’t exactly Texas. I mean, there are things I love about where I live, but I don’t find it particularly inspiring. Mountains? Yes. Beach? Yes. Flat Dallas nothingness? No.

And since a few friends have asked (hi Angela!), this last photo of the beach is available for watermark-free hi-res download from here if you want it. Happy Thursday!

(Also, in case you were wondering, this video is where my “make good art” axiom came from. I love this speech so hard.)
